Breathing Without Pause

The best way to measure respiratory rate is to view the animal from behind at an angle and count the number of times the abdominal wall rises and falls. The normal rate is 30 to 45 breaths per minute for calves, 24 to 36 for adult cattle, 15 to 30 for sheep and goats, 10 to 40 for chickens, and 12 to 20 for pigs. A distinction is made between tachypnea (increased respiratory rate), bradypnea (decreased respiratory rate), dyspnea (disturbance of respiration in frequency, depth, and volume), and apnea (cessation of breathing).
